Raised in Chicago, she began writing songs in middle school and studied classical music at the Chicago High School for the Arts. In 2015, she independently released her debut EP, Moon Shoes, which was later reissued by Atlantic Records in 2016. Her follow-up EP, Midnight Moonlight, was released in 2017. Lenae is also a member of the musical collective Zero Fatigue.
Her debut studio album, Hypnos, released in May 2022, showcased her matured artistry and featured collaborations with producers like Steve Lacy and Kaytranada. In August 2024, she released her second album, Bird's Eye, which received critical acclaim and included collaborations with artists such as Ty Dolla $ign and Childish Gambino.
