Under The Influence: Where Hip-hop Meets Psychology
Los Angeles, CA (Top40 Charts / GaKnew Roxwel) Social Worker by day and Hiphop artist by night, author GaKnew Roxwel announces the release of his new book and CD, Under the Influence and Sound of Silence. The pair creatively maps out a path to balanced emotional health and inner peace by using hiphop to break down the complexities of influence and mankind's innate dependency on automatized functions. The tandem tells the universal tale of a troubled teen unraveling his abusive past to gain mental freedom. Written like a film, the CD titled Sound of Silence gives a first person narrative, while the book, Under the Influence, analyzes how the nurture of the environment affects the character's nature. Dissecting the subconscious behavior of learning, this CD and book duo is a practical step-by-step model for ending perpetuation.

GaKnew Roxwel is a National Poetry Slam Champion with artistic accomplishments that range from appearing on Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam to recording voiceover work for and the Disney film Let It Shine. Yet, being an artist isn't his only job. He is also a Senior Social Work investigator for the Children's Law Center of , and works daily with the county's foster youth. GaKnew began mentoring at-risk youth in 2001, using hiphop as a tool to make connections, and opening dialogue. In Under the Influence he accounts his first encounters with incarcerated teens at Central Juvenile Hall. "Stone-cold ears warmed up to me as I spoke descriptively of a world they knew all too well. It felt like quantum-leaping back in time to visit my cousins. I returned week after week, watching self-proclaimed lifers reveal feelings of being trapped, and having hidden desires for change. Our journeys varied, but the commonalities were undeniable." Early in GaKnew's career it became evident that hiphop was his bridge to connect disparity with hope. In this duo faceted project he reaches out to the troubled youth and frustrated elders alike to come to a mutual understanding. GaKnew highlights that the focus is not to blame, but to heal. Under the Influence covers communication challenges, parenting techniques, habit breaking, and much more. It's a must read for any adult that works with inner city youth.
