Acclaimed jazz composer and vocalist Corina Bartra releases her seventh album Tributo A Chabuca Granda, celebrating the music of the late Peruvian icon Chabuca Granda, who is commemorated with a statue in Lima for her work creating and interpreting waltzes with Afro-Peruvian rhythms. Bartra has recorded Granda songs amid Bartra's own originals on three previous albums. Now, she completes the cycle with this affectionate collection of Granda's greatest songs.
A Peru native residing in New York City, Corina received a Bachelor of Fine Art in drum performance from Long Island University, a Jazz Diploma in African Music from Mannes College of Music, and a Masters in vocal performance from Queens College. With the influences of Chabuca Granda, as well as popular American jazz musicians like Miles Davis and Sarah Vaughan, Corina pioneered a ground-breaking fusion of Jazz and Afro-Peruvian music. She was the first vocalist to incorporate the cajon and festejo groove of Criolla music with the swinging syncopated beats of jazz, giving her a unique and unprecedented sound. Bartra's arrangements feature subtle but exciting instrumental textures and harmonies, and solos filled with inventive rhythms.
Tributo A Chabuca Granda was self produced, recorded at Capture Sound, and mixed and mastered by Paul Schellack. Other Corina Bartra projects include music for healing and transformation, a cause that she has supported through the release of several albums.
