Colombus, Ohio (Top40 Charts/ Green Light Go) Every story is a search for something. For Nick D' and the Believers they search for a compromise that joins the narrative voyages of artists like
Bob Dylan and
Leonard Cohen with the melody and stride of
Smokey Robinson and the titans of soul. Nick D' and the Believers bring these elements together in a modern dialogue where sampling is an accepted norm and the synthesizer reigns supreme.
"Woozey new soul, taut and punchy" - Chris DeVille - Columbus Alive
The transition from old soul to modern melodic grit began it's journey as Nick D'Andrea spent the last several years between a set of headphones doing home recordings and looking for a way to progress from acoustic driven, conventional songwriting to something that reflected the changing landscape of today's modern music. Collaborating extensively with friends, and learning about sampling, looping, and synthesizing, D'Andrea began incorporating these new elements into his own work.
Guitarist, Kerry Henderson, first partnered with D'Andrea on a music video, leading to his addition to the Believers where he delivers punchy, pop harmonies and rhythmically adventurous guitar licks, as well as a wealth of experience in video production. With D'Andrea supplying vocals that croon along assuredly and energetic keys, the Believers are rounded out with Joseph Barker on drums offering a bombastic sound and an excellent ear for production and arrangement. The band uses a less is more approach to create songs with a strong pop sensibility and vocal melodies they keep a lot of dynamics and don't shy away from the simple things.
Emerging onto the Columbus, OH music scene with a single and video called "Find A
Little Love", off the Throwing Stones EP, critics from Stereogum to Paste are calling the band "brilliant," "consistently mesmerizing," and "one of the fiercest live acts" quickly recognizing their woozy, new soul sound. D'Andrea explains "Columbus has a dirtier sound that's not glamorous, but there's a lot of garage soul type music here. We leave that grit in the music. Lyrically, it's not all sunshine, there's a tinge of angst and cynicism."
The Believers forthcoming EP Pyramid, due out this spring, draws on the notion of mystery and addresses the way relationships evolve, while also reflecting on the modern political and cultural landscape directly, without blinking or backing down.
