Calgary, Alberta, Canada (Top40 Charts/ Wifi PR Group) Calgary is an oil town which makes it a money town too. That's why they need bands like Jenny to point out the hypocrisy inherent in this system. In fact, everybody could use a little jolt from this Canadian folk punk band who believe that apathy is a state of mind better left to the hipster set. Being engaged in the world around you is a lot more fun anyway. You might as well be vocal about it. This attitude, along with the music itself, was certainly enough to gain them the attention and respect of activist/musician/writer, Joey "Shithead" Keithley of the legendary Vancouver band, D.O.A.. Jenny had the good fortune to open for Keithley in Calgary last year which resulted in the release of their "Love & Politics" album on his Sudden Death Records this past May. The album was mixed by the RIAA gold-certified producer, Steve Kravac (NOFX, Bad Religion, Blink 182, MXPX) at his Hell's Half Acre facility outside of Los Angeles. The album was mastered by engineer, Michael Hately (RHCP, Neil Young, Flaming Lips, Green Day, Eric Clapton). That's a pretty impressive résumé in all respects. In typical Canadian fashion, the band didn't sign their record contract until their tour brought them to Toronto where they could sign on the dotted line at the Hockey Hall of Fame in the presence of the Stanley Cup.
Jenny is Sean Hamilton, guitar; Spencer Kathrens, drums; Jarrett Brandt, lead guitar and Eric Svilpis on bass. Everyone shares vocal duties with Sean providing lead vocals. The quartet has played some notable festivals in Canada, including Canadian
Music Week in Toronto, Sled Island in Calgary and Dancing Bear in Squamish, BC. They were the 2013 winners in the "Untapped Newcomers" category of the Calgary Folk Fest Songwriting competition. Their previous album, "Heavy," charted on college radio across Western Canada and the US and their single, "How Far Can This Thing Go?" made it into rotation on commercial radio in Calgary during the summer of 2012.
Jenny, collectively, is influenced by a variety of bands and musicians. Hamilton loves Springsteen, Kathrens loves Green Day, Brandt the
Rolling Stones and Svilpis, Tom Waits. This makes for a good creative mix of styles which has had Jenny called everything from country to classic rock and punk to folk. A near death experience influences much of the song lyrics. Hamilton's fall from a fourth floor balcony while sleep walking was certainly a rude awakening. Suffering a massive concussion but eventually gaining his full memory, Hamilton is inspired by his brush with mortality. His sense of living with purpose comes through in the music.
Jenny hopes that their new album will receive enough radio play to chart on college radio in advance of their fall North American tour. In the meantime, they have gigs lined up around Western Canada this summer, including appearances at the Big Rock Brewery in Calgary, AB on June 21 and at Calgary Folk Fest on July 28.
Jenny's music is currently available through Amazon and Bandcamp. Physical copies are distributed to select North American retail outlets through
Revolver Distribution.
