Speaking of his musical history,
Black Valentine writes candidly, "I grew up around music. My mom used to play
Toni Braxton to get me to go to sleep at night. My dad worked at a record store, and I would go to work with him. I would listen to music all day. I decided early on that I was going to be a star, and would go to performing arts camps, do talent shows, and be in dance groups. It was fun! I started taking it seriously a year ago."
When asked about the themes of this latest single, "Sweetest Sin,"
Black Valentine replies with empathy and compassion.
"Listen, ladies," he says, "I want you to fall in love. I want you to also love yourself. But I want you to not be afraid to fall in love again because you got your heart broken before. You have to keep on going and you'll find the one you're looking for."
