The Philadelphia-born performer is praised for seamlessly blending jazz, gospel, and hip-hop music with insightful and uplifting poetry. Scott's latest release, The Light of the Sun (2011), carries her signature neosoul sound and personal themes of conflicted love, hurt, and hope. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Scott burst onto the music scene in the late '90s through collaborations with The Roots, Will Smith, and Common. She released her first solo album Who is Jill Scott? in 2000, which reached double platinum status and spawned the hit singles "A Long Walk" and "He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)." Scott also thrives as an actor, having appeared in the films Hounddog and Why Did I Get Married? and most recently in the HBO/BBC miniseries The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, among others.
