New York, NY (Top40 Charts) This time of year, America's freeways usher thousands of traveling musicians to Austin, Texas, for the most celebrated independent music event of the year: South By South West (SXSW). Indie rock veterans Sunspot from Madison, Wisconsin offer a special opportunity for fans, friends, and the entire world to join them in their van to share the experience firsthand as they make the annual pilgrimage for the eighth consecutive year.
Sunspot's touring van is equipped with multiple HD cameras to stream the whole trip to Austin and back, providing the opportunity to watch their live performances as well as the inevitable mania within the van. Fans will be able to watch everything Big Brother-style as well as interact through chat and via Google Plus Hangouts. "People ask us all the time what it's like, being in a band on the road. So here it is," says drummer Wendy Lynn Staats, "not just the fun and good times, but the unglamorous parts too." With the continuous live cam, the audience can decide if they just want to tune in for the musical performances, or if their inner voyeur cares to see it all.
Sharing the touring experience is nothing new to Sunspot, a band known for embracing technology and interactivity. Their "Sunspot Road Mania" podcast, begun in 2005 (190+ episodes), has brought fans to venues, recording studios, conventions, and festivals in cities all across the country, sharing both gritty details and fun quirks of being in a rock band on the road via audio/video. Recently, they embraced the Google+ Hangouts platform as a way to keep in touch with fans across the world, inviting everyone into their own studio via webcam for a couple of hours each week to share new songs, answer questions, and just chat.
While in Austin, in addition to performing their own shows, Sunspot will bring the live feed around town to catch shows and interview other bands, offering the unique perspective of a band in the trenches, soaking up every minute of the action. The internet audience is encouraged to interact by sending recommendations for places/people they wish to see on the stream.
Sunspot's live stream will launch upon their departure from Madison, Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon, March 12th at www.sunspotmusic.com
