LOS ANGELES (www.jovisan.net) - Liquid City Records is proud to announce that Canto do Rio, the latest CD by the Jovino
Santos Neto Quinteto, has been nominated for the Best Latin Jazz Album category in the 2004 Latin Grammy Awards. This is the first nomination for the Brazilian pianist/composer, who moved from Rio de Janeiro to Seattle in 1993 to pursue his musical career, after collaborating for 15 years with the legendary Hermeto Pascoal in Brazil.
Jovino formed his group in 1994 and released 2 other CDs prior to Canto do Rio, Caboclo (1997) and Live in Olympia (2001), all on Liquid City Records. The members of his Seattle-based Quinteto are Hans Teuber (flute, saxophones), Chuck Deardorf (bass), Mark Ivester (drums) and Jeff Busch (percussion). Canto do Rio also features guest musicians Harvey Wainapel (clarinet, saxophones), Flora McGill (voice), Mike Marshall (mandolin) and Pernambuco (vocal effects). The music on the CD was composed as a result of the New Works: Creation and Presentation jazz composition award given by Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Foundation to Jovino in 2003.
Jovino Santos Neto continues to establish his reputation as a brilliant musician and an inspired composer, combining the rhythmic treasures of his native Brazil with a modern jazz sensibility. Celebrating their 10th anniversary in the ensemble, Jovino's comrades navigate effortlessly through a wide spectrum of grooves and dynamics, showing tight cohesion in tricky meter changes, and shining individually in inspired solos. In Canto do Rio, Jovino has created a collection of pieces dedicated to his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, where primeval grooves such as the maracatu, batuque, marcha and maxixe are woven with contemporary harmonies and world-class jazz musicianship in exquisite arrangements for horns, voice and mandolin.
Press quotes:
- 'A kaleidoscope of reeds, strings and keyboards swirl over an undulating foundation of tart samba and choro rhythms…this exceptional date answers the question: Heard any good Brazilian jazz lately?' – Mark Holston, Jazziz
- 'This is uplifting, busy music. The whole set bustles with enthusiasm and activity, flutes, saxophones, voice and the zippy Fender Rhodes intermix with the warmth of the market place. Latin music played by first-class musicians with a world flavor; full, buxom and satisfying.' - Ferdinand Maylin, Jazznow.com
- 'CANTO DO RIO is one of the finest collections of contemporary Brazilian jazz to come along in a long while, each song refreshingly original and performed with much verve. These songs from composer/pianist Jovino Santos Neto are exceptional, and a fine look into contemporary Brazilian jazz. Every musician on this collection shines and soars with unique solo work. The harmony of the group in performance is perfect. Flora McGill's vocals are a special treat. Jovino Santos Neto has a relaxed, sensitive piano style, innovative and entertaining. If you like contemporary Brazilian jazz, this is one of the finest entries to date. Flawless and enjoyable. Highly recommended.' – Lee Prosser, Jazzreview.com
