
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The top 10 grossing films this weekend generated a total of 76.8 million dollars; 78.7% of the total combined take of 97.6 million this weekend.
Still leading the charts after 2 weeks is AMERICAN PIE 2 from UNIVERSAL with a weekend gross of $12.52 million at 3157 locations averaging $3,965 per screen. Raising its domestic cume to $109.34 million in week 3, it experienced a solid -41% drop despite the 85 prints it added this weekend.
Taking second place is RUSH HOUR 2 from NEW LINE grabbing a healthy $11.58 million for a $3,860 average. It lost a real -39% moving out of -79 theatres in week 4, bringing its US total to $183.42 million.
JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK from DIMENSION which opened this week came in third, bringing home $11.02 million for a $3,985 average.
Fourth place goes to DIMENSION's OTHERS. It managed to sell $ 8.57 million worth of tickets at theatres around the nation with a screen average of $3,516. Upping its domestic cume to $ 25.44 million, it had an acceptable drop of -21% while it added 283 prints in week 3.
Rank number five is taken over by RAT RACE (PARAMOUNT). It collected $ 8.11 million over the weekend for an average of $3,179. Upping its domestic cume to $ 25.44 million, it had an acceptable drop of -30% while it added 1 prints in week 2.
Entering the chart in sixth position is SUMMER CATCH from WARNER BROS.. It grabbed $ 7.02 million at 2335 screens.
PRINCESS DIARIES (BUENA VISTA) gets comfortable in seventh place, recording $ 6.60 million in 2749 locations around the country. Upping its domestic cume to $ 82.39 million, it had an acceptable drop of -31% while it added 23 prints in week 4.
UNIVERSAL's CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN lands on rank eight, clocking $ 4.01 million in 1612 spots. Raising its domestic cume to $ 14.09 million in week 2, it experienced a solid -44% drop despite the 17 prints it added this weekend.
Yet another new member to the club JOHN CARPENTER'S GHOSTS OF MARS from SONY takes nineth place, generating $ 3.80 million at 2048 screens.
Bringing up the rear this week is 20TH CENTURY FOX's PLANET OF THE APES. It finishes tenth, holding onto $ 3.59 million from 1931 sites. It tumbled another -50% in week 5, scaling back to 3060 (-1,129) screens for a US cume of $167.84 million.
