New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Proper American) Don
McLean is one of America's most enduring singer-songwriters, forever embedded in the American cultural psyche with classic hits such as 'American Pie' and 'Vincent (Starry Starry Night)'. Since his first charting record in 1971,
McLean has amassed over 40 gold and platinum records worldwide, received numerous honors and awards, and has been inducted into the
National Academy of Popular
Music Songwriters Hall of Fame.
"Addicted To Black", features 11 new original songs, several of which revolve around themes of death and remembrance.
"I don't know why I have this dark side to me," says
McLean of the subject matter. "It's manifested itself in many of the songs that I've written. I'm not an unhappy person, I guess. Maybe I am. I don't know. But I do relate to people who have heartache."
McLean's first promotional photo, taken in 1964, graces the back cover. "I put it on there because that's the beginning and the song talks a lot about the end," says McLean. "I'm winding down. I'm doing my shows, and I don't know how many years I'll do that."
But McLean's career shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. "Addicted to Black" lands on the heels of a recent PBS documentary, a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, and the re-emergence of "
American Pie" on the top of the UK singles chart in February.
McLean is also taking a 40th anniversary lap throughout North
America and Europe.
"As I grow older, I am starting to understand myself a bit," said McLean, in a recent interview. "...In my early years I was completely in my own world, had the commercial success of the 1970s, a middle age swinging period, and now an older period of stability with a beautiful marriage and wonderful children. Not too many people can say that."
