NARM To Honor Katy Perry With "Artist Of The Year" Award At Music Biz 2012
New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Capitol Records) NARM, the music business association, will present its "Artist of the Year" Award to global superstar Katy Perry during the Music Biz 2012 Awards Dinner Party on Thursday, May 10, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. Perry had a banner year in 2011, tying Michael Jackson's record for most No. 1 singles from one album when five tracks from her Capitol Records sophomore release, Teenage Dream, topped the charts. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts in August 2010, achieved double Platinum certification in the U.S. and has sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide. The album also earned four Grammy nominations in 2011, including Album of the Year, and two in 2012 for the single "Firework."

"Katy's music was absolutely everywhere over the past year, and her dominance of the singles charts is a nearly unprecedented accomplishment," said Jim Donio, President of NARM. "While Katy was a highly successful artist prior to Teenage Dream, she has unquestionably blossomed into a true global superstar and has earned this Award in every sense of the word."

Now, with the impending release of Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection on March 26, Perry is poised to continue her success into 2012 and beyond. The album will feature the original Teenage Dream as well as three new tracks, including "Part of Me," which Perry debuted during an electrifying performance at this year's Grammy Awards. The track sold more than 400,000 copies in its first week., and debuted at #1 Billboard in its first week, a feat achieved only 20 times in the past 53 years.

This summer Katy will be coloring the silver screen when her first film, "Katy Perry: Part Of Me", is released worldwide by Paramount Insurge. The 3-D documentary reveals Katy's life on- & off-stage during the past year, which she noted to BBC Radio 1, "was the most intense year I think of my life."

Perry burst onto the scene in 2008 with her debut album, One of the Boys, and its provocative hit single "I Kissed a Girl," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album achieved Platinum status in the U.S., selling more than 3 million copies worldwide, and earning two Grammy nominations in 2009 and 2010. After touring the U.S. and Canada as part of the 2008 Warped Tour, Perry embarked on her first headlining tour in 2009, quickly gaining notoriety for her outsized personality, forward-thinking fashion sense and dynamic stage shows. She then brought her vision to the world at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards with a blowout performance of Teenage Dream's first single, "California Gurls," that featured an appearance by legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. The resulting 124-date California Dreams Tour, which kicked off in February 2011, capitalized on that success to become one of the top concert draws of the year, placing 13th on Billboard's annual Top 25 Tours list and earning nearly $50 million.

Former recipients of the "Artist of the Year" Award have included Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Green Day.
