TORONTO, CANADA (Top40 Charts/ Centre for International Governance Innovation) K'naan, an internationally acclaimed Somali-Canadian recording artist, will be performing at a celebration of the new CIGI Campus on Friday,
September 16, 2011.
The event is for an invitation-only audience of 200 community leaders from the not-for-profit, public, academic, technology and business sectors - but it will also be live-webcast to the Waterloo community and beyond, so that the widest possible audience can enjoy K'naan's performance.
All media and accompanying technical crews must register in advance (by Sept. 14), for security reasons, and should arrive no later than 10:30 a.m. on the day of the event, particularly if television cameras or other technical set-up is required. K'naan will perform songs from his critically acclaimed album Troubadour. The Somalia-born, Juno award winning artist spent his childhood in Mogadishu during the Somali civil war before moving to New York City and then to Toronto. He recently travelled to Somalia pledging to do "all I can to help my people in Somalia."
Performing with K'naan will be a children's choir, composed of students from schools in the Waterloo area and Toronto.
The CIGI Campus is a new academic facility in Waterloo, now in the final phase of construction. Students of the Balsillie School of International Affairs (founded in 2007, with classes currently split over two local university campuses) will be attending classes at the new facility this fall.
The campus is also home to CIGI, a non-partisan, independent think tank on global governance, which will keep its offices in the existing former Seagram Museum building, but hold its public events in the new CIGI Auditorium.
Future occupants of the campus may include a proposed program international law, as well as other academic and research institutions.
