LONDON, UK (IMPALA) - The proposed merger between Sony Music and BMG faces stiff opposition from European indie labels. IMPALA, an independent trade organization representing over 2,000 independent European labels, announced today that they would fight the merger between the industry giants. "We want to avoid a situation where a combined entity makes it impossible for smaller independent labels and artists to get access to broadcasters and retailers," said Phillippe Kern, secretary general of the organization. IMPALA will take its objections to the deal to the European Union. The EU's Competition Commission is expected to make its ruling on the propsal on February 12.
