NEW YORK (Legal centre website) - The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks to proceed with her lawsuit against Outkast over their 1998 song "Rosa Parks". Parks made history in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. The act led to a city-wide boycott of the city's public transportation system which in turn led to a key victory for the anti-segregation movement in the Southern U.S. Parks filed the lawsuit against Outkast in 1999, claiming that her name was used without her permission and that it defamed her character. Though the case was initially dismissed in 1999, subsequent appeals by both Outkast and Ms. Parks have led to the Supreme Court. No word yet on when the case will be heard.
