NEW YORK (Lockdown/Murder Inc. announcement) - The Murder Inc. label has changed its name to Lockdown Records. At a press conference in New York yesterday label head Irv Gotti announced the name change as his top artists, Ja Rule and Ashanti, looked on. Irv Gotti explained that the name change had been inspired by discussions with hip hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons and Nation Of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan who convinced him that people focused on the negative connotations of the label name. Murder Inc. has been the focus of an ongoing money-laundering investigation. At the press conference, Gotti rejected Eminem's apology for the 10-year-old free-style in which the rapper uses offensive racial terms, saying, "I'm a defender of black women I can't give him no pass."
