NEW YORK (Arista Records announcement) - Arista recording group OutKast's
"Hey Ya" ascends to
No 1 on the Billboard Airplay Monitor Mainstream Top 40, while
"The Way You Move" commands the
No 1 spot for a second week on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles charts -
the first time in Billboard Monitor history that two different songs by the same group have stood at the top of the two separate formats at the same time, it was announced today by Antonio "L.A." Reid, president and CEO, Arista Records.
As Speakerboxxx/The Love Below surpasses 4-times RIAA platinum in its 10th week out, the scene is set for OutKast's next chart conquest: Outkast: The Videos celebrates 10 years of supreme clips with a full-length DVD compilation that will arrive in stores on December 16th, just in time for what is shaping up as the biggest Holiday buying season in nearly a half-decade.
February 2004 will mark the 10th anniversary of OutKast's chart debut with "Player's Ball," the first single from their Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik album, and the first clip (directed by Sean "Puffy" Combs!) on Outkast: The Videos. It is followed by the title single's video, "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik," which was directed by F. Gary Gray.
Atlanta-based OutKast returned with their breakthrough second album in 1996, ATLiens. Its first single pick, "Elevators (Me & You)," became their first top 5 R&B and No 12 pop crossover hit and first RIAA gold single. It was followed by the title single, "ATLiens," expanding their crossover streak, sending the album to platinum and No 1 R&B and No 2 pop; both videos were directed by Michael Martin.
Following the release of Aquemini in 1998, October 2000 marked a career turning point for OutKast - as their next album Stankonia blasted off with "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)," an image-making single (with a video directed by Dave Meyers) that earned OutKast their first stronghold in the Alternative Rock market. The album was already triple-platinum by the time "Ms. Jackson" hit the No 1 R&B and No 1 pop perfecta, with a video directed by F. Gary Gray. Another Dave Meyers clip followed for "So Fresh, So Clean." At the Grammy awards in March 2002, OutKast became double winners, as "Ms. Jackson" won Best Rap Performance by a Duo/Group and Stankonia won Best Rap Album.
Pre-Christmas 2001 brought Big Boi & Dre Present...OutKast, their first 'hits' collection. It featured three brand new tracks, including the next crossover hit, "The Whole World," whose video was directed by Bryan Barber.
Outkast: The Videos brings the program up to date with director Bryan Barber's videos for the current singles, "The Way You Move" featuring Sleepy Brown (from Big Boi's SPEAKERBOXXX) and "Hey Ya!" (from Andre 3000's The Love Below). Included on the compilation is the 'long version' that couples both clips, followed by the separate single versions for each. In addition to Dolby Digital 5.1. Surround Audio, the interactive DVD package includes a photo gallery of OutKast.
