Detroit Symphony Official Website) - Despite a work stoppage that has left Orchestra Hall in
Detroit quiet, the musicians of the
Detroit Symphony will be making their music available to all of southeast Michigan through a live television broadcast on Sunday, October 24th at 3PM.
WADL-TV38 and the musicians have agreed to a broadcast of their concert from Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, featuring internationally acclaimed conductor and violinist Joseph Silverstein with works by Vivaldi and Brahms.
WADL decided to broadcast the concert to showcase the tremendous community asset that may be in jeopardy because of the contract dispute between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the musicians. "There are many, many people who never get a chance to attend such a performance and may not realize what's at stake," said Steve Antoniotti, Vice President and General Manager of WADL-TV38. "We're not attempting to take sides in the complicated negotiation."
The strike of the DSO by the musicians began October 4th.
"It's a strike we called only after management flatly rejected our proposal to accept more than $9 million in cuts in salary and benefits, including a 22 percent cut in salary next year," said cellist Haden McKay, speaking for the musicians. "It is a strike that management forced on us by refusing to negotiate at meeting after meeting."
McKay also said that the musicians and the union have filed charges of unfair labor practices by management with the National Labor Relations Board.
WADL-TV38, owned by Adell Broadcasting, is the only locally-owned, full-power television station in the Detroit market. Its digital signal can be seen over the air, on Direct TV and on all cable systems throughout the seven counties of southeast Michigan. "This is a commitment to local programming that is unique and celebrates what we have in our community," said owner Kevin Adell.
The 3PM concert on October 24th at Christ Church Cranbrook (470 Church Rd., Bloomfield Hills) will present Vivaldi's Four Seasons for Violin and Orchestra, Op 8, Nos. 1-4, and Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op 73.
Violin soloists will be DSO Associate Concertmaster Kimberly Ann Kaloyanides Kennedy; Elayna Duitman, formerly of the DSO, now with the Cleveland Orchestra; Sarah Crocker, formerly of the DSO, now with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York; and Maestro Silverstein.
