Dayton, OH (Top40 Charts/ Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra) - The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (DPO) has released a new compact disc recording of two 20th century works: William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1 ("Afro-American") and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 6. Both performances were recorded live at the Schuster Center during the DPO's 2008-2009 season, and both were conducted by the DPO's Music Director, Neal Gittleman. The performance of William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1 includes the recitation of poems by Paul Laurence Dunbar by Dr. Herbert Woodward Martin of the University of Dayton. Each of the Symphony's four movements is prefaced by a Dunbar poem.

The new CD was made possible through a "New Media Initiative" grant made to the DPO by the Miriam Rosenthal Memorial Trust Fund. It is the first of three recordings that will be issued under the auspices of the New Media Initiative grant. Future CDs will include performances from the past season (2009-2010) and the coming season (2010-2011).

The new CD is available for sale for $20 through the Dayton Philharmonic office on the 2nd floor of Performance Place, 109 N. Main Street in Dayton, OR at any Classical or Classical Connections concert during intermission starting with the season kickoff concert on September 23rd, 2010.

The full CD as well as individual tracks will also shortly be available for download through the DPO's website, www.daytonphilharmonic.com.
