NEW YORK (Townshead Official/Who Fans Website) - Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, the only surviving members of the Who, are to begin working on material for a new studio album. It would be released under the name of The Who and be the group's first new material in 21 years. According to Townshend's official website, he and Daltrey will hit the studio in March to record songs based on Townshend's autobiography The Boy Who Heard Music. The set is targeted for a summer 2004 release and will be supported with US and UK tours, according to the website. Townshend, Daltrey and bassist John Entwistle made some tentative steps in the direction of new music in the summer of 2002 before Entwistle's death as the band rehearsed for a US tour. Townshend has admitted he wrestled with the idea of releasing new music under the Who name. But he added: "[Roger] and I on a stage - whatever we call ourselves - can't avoid the fact that in some illusionary way we bring down the mysterious mantle of the Who around us. "It will always happen. So we might as well call it the Who."
