New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Shore Fire Media) - When Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews plays the Gentilly Stage on May 2, the final day of Jazz Fest, it will cap over a week of thrilling activity for NOLA's leading young rock/funk/R&B superstar. On Monday, Apr. 19, Troy will be honored as Entertainer of the Year at
Gambit Magazine's 2010 Big Easy
Music Awards; he is also nominated for Best Male Performer and Best Rock Performer.
The following day, April 20, Verve will release Andrews' highly anticipated new release 'Backatown,'. Entertainment Weekly already proclaimed "go get Trombone Shorty's new album, Backatown, now!"
On Friday, April 30, Troy will be the subject of a panel discussion titled "From the Street To the Stars: How Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews built his career from the grass roots to a deal with Universal Music," as part of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Sync-Up music conference.
In between there will be shows at Tipitina's, The House of Blues, and The Blue Nile, among others but the official schedule is frequently only the beginning as Troy is known to join friends and electrify audiences in surprise appearances all over the Festival grounds and in clubs until the wee hours of the night throughout the festival.
In 2009, at age 23, Trombone Shorty was the youngest artist ever to be featured on the prestigious official Jazz Fest poster (see above - Wynton Marsalis had previously been the youngest of the legends so honored when he was 41.) Troy was so busy that year that the New York Times' Jon Pareles asked "By the way, does Trombone Shorty sleep during Jazz Fest? Or does he just do another gig hourly?"
Now 24, Andrews is a 20-year Jazz Fest veteran. He first took the stage at Jazz Fest in 1990, as an admiring Bo Diddley looked on (see above). Other favorite Jazz Fest memories for Andrews include performing with Norah Jones in 2007, and partying on stage with the Neville Brothers in several festival closing sets over the years.
