Los Angeles, CA (Top40 Charts/ J2 Communications) - Award-winning jazz musician Vijay Iyer, whose Historicity was hailed as the year's best jazz album by the Los Angeles Times, New York Times and other leading critics, will perform in the Idyllwild Arts New Music Concert at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at the REDCAT Theater.

'We're extremely fortunate to be able to present the West Coast premiere of Vijay Iyer's Interventions. His ground-breaking work and performances have taken the jazz and contemporary music worlds by storm'

Iyer will join members of the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra as a soloist in the West Coast debut of his Interventions for Improvised Piano, Electronics and Orchestra, which was commissioned by the American Composers' Orchestra.

Tickets are $25 (or $10 for students) and can be purchased online at www.redcat.org, by visiting the REDCAT box office, or by calling 213-237-2800.

The concert's program will also feature the world premiere of Lawrence Dillon's Figments and Fragments, which was commissioned by the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra and the Richard P. Wilson Endowment for New Music in celebration of Robert Schumann's 200th anniversary. Peter Askim, composer in residence at Idyllwild Arts, will conduct the 45-piece Orchestra, which comprises some of the nation's most talented young musicians, who are students at Idyllwild Arts.

The New Music Concert also features the world premiere of Askim's Still Points: Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, with a solo by Michael Becker, principal trombonist of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

The Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra will also perform Pierre Jalbert's Les espaces infinis and Aaron Jay Kernis's Too Hot Toccata.

'We're extremely fortunate to be able to present the West Coast premiere of Vijay Iyer's Interventions. His ground-breaking work and performances have taken the jazz and contemporary music worlds by storm,' Askim said. 'Vijay's cross-genre explorations and cutting-edge compositions fit perfectly with our orchestra's commitment to new music.'

The Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra is part of Idyllwild Arts, the West Coast's most prestigious boarding high-school for the arts. Founded in 1950 as a summer program for adults, such renowned artists as Ansel Adams, Meredith Willson, Bella Lewitzky, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Pete Seeger and Norman Corwin have taught at the campus.

Located in the mountains two hours east of Los Angeles, Idyllwild Arts continues to host a popular summer program, and became a fully accredited, full-time arts academy for high-school students in 1985.

Its alumni include such notable artists as Shepard Fairey, Tony nominee Marin Ireland, clarinetist Evan Christopher, and musician Trevor Hall.
