New York (Top40 Charts/ Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras) - As part of the BSO's celebration of the 50th anniversary of its Youth Concert Series last year, the orchestra announced a new partnership with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) for the 2009-10 season. The first event in this collaboration will take place on Saturday, November 14, at noon, with Federico Cortese leading BYSO in a performance of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf at Symphony Hall. Young people attending the concert will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of pre-concert activities from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., including puppet-making with a special focus on Peter and the Wolf characters; an Instrument Playground, where children have a chance to try a variety of musical instruments; story-telling sessions connected to the afternoon's performance; and special instrument demonstrations, featuring BSO players discussing their instruments.

This partnership begins a new chapter in the commitment of both organizations to engage and educate young concert-goers in classical music. Inaugurated as "Young People's Concerts" early in the BSO's history, the series was established as an ongoing program by Harry Ellis Dickson (1908-2003) in 1959 to help the BSO reach out to young people in the greater Boston area and nurture future audiences. Founded in 1959, BYSO celebrates its 52nd season this year as one of the largest and most comprehensive youth orchestra programs in the U.S.

The Boston Youth Symphony, comprised of 119 outstanding musicians ranging in age from 11 to 18, is the premier orchestra of BYSO. For the November 14 concert, 60 students will be performing Peter and the Wolf. Federico Cortese has been music director of the BYSO since 1999 and celebrates his 11th year during the 2009-2010 season. He is currently music director of New England String Ensemble and conductor of the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra at Harvard University, and was appointed principal conductor of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in summer 2009.

TICKET INFORMATION

Adult single tickets are $20 and include FREE admission for up to 4 children, up to 18 years old. BYSO concerts have reserved seating. For further information, call 617-266-1200 or visit www.bso.org. All programs and artists are subject to change.

UBS is proud to support the BSO Youth and Family Concerts.
