Anytime I hear Karriem create music or hear him play, I am reminded of how wonderful music can be."
The evening begins with an explosive drum and DJ showcase pairing Riggins and legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock, as they weave a mix of soul, hip-hop and jazz. Next, a special premiere of the Karriem Riggins Quartet featuring master musician Mulgrew Miller on piano and rhodes. In a 1995 New York Times poll consisting of his peers, Miller was voted the most in demand pianist. Miller is credited with over 400 recordings as a leader and sideman.
Riggins has played in the past with a dizzying cross-section of artists spanning the hip-hop and jazz worlds: Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, J Dilla, Madlib, Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Erykah Badu on her New Amerykah (4th World War) CD, as well as countless other jazz, future soul & hip hop releases, including work with Common and The Roots. This series of shows will be Riggins' first as a leader and will feature material from his upcoming 2010 release. Riggins says, "I'm incorporating elements from various genres and fusing them together in a way that's thought-provoking."
