LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts/ Soft Machine Fans Website) - Hugh Hopper, bassist and songwriter for Soft Machine, died June 10 after battling leukemia for more than a year. He was 64.

Hopper joined Soft Machine in late 1968, after the departure of Kevin Ayers and after the band had recorded its debut album and toured the U.S. with Jimi Hendrix.
He originally served as the group's tour manager, but with drummer Robert Wyatt and organist Mike Ratledge recorded the band's lauded second album, Volume Two, an early experiment in jazz fusion.

He is survived by his wife, Christine.
