New York, NY. (Top40 Charts/ Shore Fire Media) - John Bigham, leader of the Soul of John Black, characterizes his style as "country funk" and it shows on the group's new album 'Black John' (February 17 / Eclecto Groove Records.) He explains, "The music has a funky, country blues and soul feel. There's a sense that these stories are taking place in the past, even when they talk about contemporary situations."

Here are a few of Bigham's stories behind the songs on 'Black John':
"White Dress"
This is a real dirty blues. "You got on a white dress and black drawers, baby, when you're dancing in the sun." I didn't make that up, I saw it and I knew I had to write about it. In the blues, you can get away with stuff like that. It's pretty sparse, with a hard groove on the Stella slide guitar. The lyrics are kind of sexy and garbled, like how Son House or John Lee Hooker used to sing, but if you really want to hear what I'm saying, you can.
"Forever"
I live in Hollywood so I'm always seeing my favorite Hollywood couples breaking up. Some my favorite friends broke up too. We used to have a couples night with three or four couples we knew, one of them being the life of the party. I thought they had a perfect relationship and, after being married seven years, they broke up. The title is ironic; it's another bit of country funk, in a Sly Stone manner, with a nice slide guitar solo to pull you into the music.
"I Knew A Lady"
This tune is another take on Hollywood, where all the young girls are getting into trouble. I do a Lead Belly kind of thing on the verses over a DC Go Go groove. It's a long party jam.
One of the most eclectic musicians of our time and a staple on the Los Angeles music scene, John Bigham has collaborated with the likes of Fishbone, Miles Davis, Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Nikka Costa. 'Black John,' the new album from the Soul of Black John, comes out February 17, 2009, on Eclecto Groove Records.
