Carrie Underwood made their marks as winners and outstanding performers at last night's 36th Annual American
Music Awards at the Los Angeles' Nokia Theater.
J Records' very own Superwoman Alicia Keys won two AMAs for Favorite Album Pop/Rock and Favorite Album Soul/Rhythm & Blues for As I Am, which continues to confirm Alicia Keys' position as an international smash-artist.
RCA Records' certified quadruple platinum rockers Daughtry won Favorite Band, Duo Or Group Pop/Rock. Just last year, the band won three American Music Awards, including Favorite Album (Pop/Rock) for its self-titled debut.
Arista Nashville Superstar Carrie Underwood won Favorite Album Country Music for her Double-Platinum Carnival Ride. Earlier this year, Underwood became the only artist in country chart history to have their first seven singles all reach No 1.
The show's highlights included a spectacular opening by Christina Aguilera. Leona Lewis offered a dramatic performance of her chart topping new single "Better In Time." Sarah McLachlan was joined by Pink for a surprise performance of McLachlan's classic hit "Angel," highlighted on her recent career spanning release "Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan." Unquestionably one of the highlights of the evening was Annie Lennox who was honored with an Award of Merit given to the industry's most influential artists. Lennox also gave a special performance of "Why" which will be featured on Annie's first retrospective due in February 2009. Blockbuster winner Alicia Keys closed last night's ceremonies with Queen Latifah and Kathleen Battle joining her on "Superwoman."
Daughtry Wins at American Music Awards
At the 2008 American Music Awards Sunday night, 19/RCA recording artist DAUGHTRY won for Favorite Band, Duo or Group (Pop/Rock). Just last year, the band won three American Music Awards, including Favorite Album (Pop/Rock) for its self-titled debut, which has been certified quadruple platinum.
"It's an amazing feeling for us to be honored again so soon," says the group's singer, Chris Daughtry. "What makes this night even more special is that we're recognized for our work together as a band."
Daughtry, bassist Josh Paul, drummer Joey Barnes and guitarists Brian Craddock and Josh Steely, are currently in the studio, recording the follow-up to the band's debut. The as-yet-titled album is scheduled for release in summer 2009.
Earlier this year, the Grammy-nominated group released a deluxe version of it debut, which is a hit on more than four continents. Powered by a trio of No 1 songs, "It's Not Over," "Home," and "Feels Like Tonight." DAUGHTRY has become the biggest selling artist release of the past two years and the fastest selling rock debut in Soundscan history.
The newly released Daughtry Deluxe expanded CD/DVD version contains the album's original 12 songs with four bonus tracks on CD, plus a DVD with videos for all five of the singles, live performances and exclusive interviews.
