NEW YORK, NY. (Top 40 Charts/ Seaport Marketplace) - Renowned for defying convention, Brooklyn Philharmonic
Music Director Michael Christie and the Brooklyn Philharmonic will continue to embrace the unexpected by performing a free outdoor concert which includes a performance of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams' celebrated piece, "Shaker Loops," accompanied by a synchronized fireworks display, on June 14 at New York City's South Street Seaport.
In selecting the four-movement "Shaker Loops" - music never before performed with live fireworks accompaniment - Music Director Christie is challenging both his orchestra and his audiences to think beyond safe, traditional firework pairings, such as Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." The "hauntingly ethereal" nature of Adams' work, while rooted in American Minimalism, displays a dynamic, almost electrically charged element that makes it an ideal choice for fireworks.
The free outdoor concert will also include great works for string orchestra, with the performance culminating in the spectacular combination of Adams' celebrated "Shaker Loops" and synchronized fireworks.
Brooklyn Philharmonic's performance caps a full day of family fun at the acclaimed Children's Day at South Street Seaport. The concert marks the second year in a row that Brooklyn Philharmonic will perform with the synchronized Target Fireworks Spectacular in lower Manhattan.
Conducted by Music Director Christie, the concert is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., and concludes with John Adams' "Shaker Loops" performed live to a stunning fireworks display launched from two barges into the skies above lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. The 9:30 p.m. fireworks show - produced by Zambelli, one of the oldest family-run fireworks companies - rivals any major pyrotechnic celebration in New York City.
All of the activities throughout Children's Day, including the concert and fireworks, are free to the public.
"Children's Day provides wonderful free entertainment to lower Manhattan residents, as well as families from throughout the Tri-State area," said Lincoln Palsgrove IV, senior marketing manager, General Growth Properties. "GGP's commitment to Children's Day reflects our role as a community partner and advocate for the continued vitalization of downtown."
Children's Day, sponsored by the Seaport and a part of The River to River Festival, features activities for the entire family on the stages, streets and piers of South Street Seaport, the popular and historic downtown destination.
