Washington, DC. (Top40 Charts/ Essence Magazine PR) - Washington, DC-based Nigerian sensation KUKU is being honored in the August "Do Right Man" issue of Essence magazine, which features 50 single, hardworking and inspiring men who are making a positive difference in the black community. The issue hits stands on July 10, 2007.

Essence is spotlighting KUKU because he's using his "Afro Soul Acoustic Experience" to empower people's futures and vicariously connect them to their heritage. His unique sound intertwines African, soul, folk and jazz music. KUKU regularly conducts workshops in schools to empower children, grant them positive exposure to Africa and help them to tap into their self-pride and creative talents. From the outset of his musical career, he has been dedicated to directing proceeds from his sales to deserving nonprofits. KUKU also makes a special effort to ensure that his tour includes several free/low cost shows, making high-quality music accessible to people at all income levels.

In a quote from one of KUKU's nominations, a 'fam' club member (because those that follow him are closer than fans) expressed, "KUKU is a remarkable singer/songwriter, and without question one of the finest, most selfless men that I have ever met. . . . It is rare that a popular artist experiences this level of success and yet remains socially-conscious, humble and connected to his people."

KUKU remarked, "I am honored that Essence magazine saw fit to recognize and share my work with the more than 7 million readers who will read the August issue. Essence readers are striving to nurture their spirits, celebrate life, empower themselves and connect with others - I seek to do the same through my music. I thank Essence for being a bridge that connects us."

KUKU has been actively touring since 2004, and has played in more than 50 venues so far in 2007, including: DC's Blues Alley and Old Post Office Pavilion; New York's SOB's; Eddie's Attic in Atlanta; Colorado's Afroblu; Philadelphia's World Cafe; the Temple Bar in LA; and Chicago's South Shore Cultural Center and Old Town School of Folk Music series, 'AfroFolk live.' He has opened for some eminent names in music, most recently when he traveled to Atlanta to perform at the Georgia Music Fest with some of reggae music's greats, including Luciano and Mighty Sparrow. The demand for his music by his growing fan base resulted in their creation of the KUKU Fam Club (www.myspace.com/kukufamclub) and also has him crafting his next highly anticipated full-length album.
