NEW YORK (Billboard) - Tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, keyboardist Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Roy Hargrove will celebrate the music and lives of late jazz legends John Coltrane and Miles Davis with a U.S. tour dubbed Directions In Music. The 28-city trek will kick off Sept. 19 in Santa Cruz, Calif., and is scheduled to wrap Oct. 29 in Naples, Fla. While the work of Coltrane and Davis has influenced scores of jazz musicians, for Hancock the tour will be a partial homecoming, as he began his career as a sideman with Davis in the 1960s. As well as being versatile headliners in their own right, both Brecker and Hargrove have worked with a veritable who's who of jazz musicians throughout their careers, including Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, McCoy Tyner and Sonny Rollins. The Directions In Music tour will find Brecker, Hancock and Hargrove leading a quintet through the music of Davis and Coltrane. Rounding out the group will be John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums.
