LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts) - Controversial rapper Eminem will perform at the 2002 MTV Movie Awards, along with the rock duo The White Stripes. MTV's 11th annual show takes place on 1 June at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium and will be shown on television in the United States on 6 June.

Eminem's Real Slim Shady single and album won three Grammy Awards last year, including those for the best rap solo performance and rap solo album.
But the Detroit rapper, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, has been much criticised for the content of his songs, which detractors say are violent and homophobic.
His mother launched a $10m lawsuit against him for using the lyrics "my mom smokes more dope than I do" on the hit My Name Is. When he toured in Ontario, Canada, some politicians tried to bar him from the province, saying his lyrics promoted violence against women.

Last year, Eminem was sentenced to two years probation for carrying a concealed weapon and ordered to undergoing counselling and drug testing. He was accused of pulling a gun on a man who kissed his wife.

White Stripes

By contrast, members of US band White Stripes are unassuming, and appear to dislike media hype. Jack and Meg White claim to be brother and sister, two of 10 children of a Catholic family from the Mexican district of Detroit.
They have turned down major concerts and magazine appearances, preferring to find music venues outside of the grip of major music promoters.
The duo hit the headlines last year when they rejected the Gap fashion chain's offer of a $1m advertising deal.

Nominees

The MTV awards will be hosted by Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Presenters will include Nicolas Cage, Jennifer Connelly, Matt Damon, Anthony Hopkins, Bernie Mac, Chris Rock and Will Smith.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" earned the most nominations with six.
"The Fast and the Furious" and "Rush Hour 2" each received five each. "Moulin Rouge" and "Shrek" took four nominations apiece.
