DETROIT, MI. (Detroit International Jazz Festival) - The newly expanded Detroit International Jazz Festival will welcome a wide spectrum of musical artists on Labor Day weekend, the 27th annual celebration September 1-4.

The heart of the festival remains pure Jazz at historic Hart Plaza on the Detroit Riverfront. In addition, it also now swings three blocks north on legendary Woodward Avenue to the new Campus Martius Park, and embraces Blues, Gospel, R&B, Zydeco, and Motown sounds. More than 100 bands will perform on six stages throughout Jazz Fest weekend. The Detroit International Jazz Festival continues its proud tradition as one of the largest free musical events in North America.

A partial list of headliners for the 2006 Detroit Jazz Festival includes a Friday evening Motown blast off with the Funk Brothers and Temptations Revue starring Dennis Edwards. Other performers will include Brazilian Jazz great Sergio Mendes, premier Jazz vocalist Diane Schuur with the Wayne State University Jazz Big Band, New Orleans icon Dr. John, Jazz legend Ahmad Jamal, and Pop and Roots stars Joan Osborne, Taj Mahal, Richie Havens, Marcia Ball, The Gerald Wilson Big Band, Buckwheat Zydeco, The Dirty Dozen Brass band, Papa Lou Donaldson, Mose Allison, and BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, among many others.

Other festival features include a Food Network Pavilion, dedicated children's area, tasty fare from Detroit's finest restaurants, New Orleans Brass Band Street Parades daily, Mississippi Queen-style riverboat cruises on the Detroit River and more.
