New York, NY (Atlantic Records) - The music phenomenon that is
Gnarls Barkley has dominated the singles chart for the past seven weeks with remarkable sales of its debut single 'Crazy'. With the track at the top for a further week,
Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse take their place in history as one of the very few acts to have held the top UK slot for nearly 2 months.
The duo, signed to Warner Bros. Records UK and Downtown/Atlantic Records will join an elite club featuring legends such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley and the Spice Girls (some of you must've been into them).
Since debuting at No 1, 'Crazy' has sold over 700,000 copies, holding off the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mary J. Blige & U2, Snow Patrol and Rihanna to name a few, in the process.
As Gnarlsification continued, the UK saw 'Crazy' become the first single to top the singles chart on download sales alone as the duo enjoyed the rare 1-2-3 of simultaneous single, album and airplay domination.
A seventh week ensure that 'Crazy' will be the longest run by an artist's debut single at No 1 since the Spice Girls seduced the world with 'Wannabe' a decade ago.
The Gnarls juggernaut continued unabated with the release of the debut album 'St. Elsewhere'.
Greeting the world at the top of the album chart, 'St. Elsewhere' sold 160,000 in its first two weeks of release and is at No 4 this week. Remarkably, 'St. Elsewhere' is also the biggest selling No 1 album on the digital chart since its introduction.
'As a vigilant optimist, I cannot say I am surprised,' said Barkley, when reached for contact. 'My work is far from done. But I must say that I am pleased. The world is ready to hear what I have to teach.'
Note, Gnarls began this 8th week still at No 1.
