BROOKLYN, NY (Up Over Jazz Productions/United Music Makers) - On Saturday, April 15, 2006, some of the all-time great Afro-Caribbean jazz musicians will gather for a once-in-a-lifetime concert. Sabado de Gloria: All-Star Salute to the Giants of Latin Jazz, to be held in the intimate setting of Long Island University's Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts in Brooklyn, will pay homage to the Afro-Caribbean jazz masters no longer among us.

The Sabado de Gloria concert - so named because it falls on Holy Saturday, known as Sabado de Gloria on the Latin religious calendar - will bring Dave Valentin, Hilton Ruiz, Giovanni Hidalgo, Papo Vazquez, Randy Brecker, Sherman Irby, John Benitez, Dafnis Prieto and Anthony Carrillo together for the first time. The band will perform new arrangements to classic Latin jazz tunes and music composed for the occasion.

"It is exciting to have these great musicians perform at a dynamic performance venue like Long Island University's Kumble Theater," said event co-organizer Bob Myers of Up Over Jazz Productions. "I am grateful to the University for providing the central Brooklyn community with access to world-class productions at the Kumble Theater."

The Kumble is a fitting venue for the historic Sabado de Gloria concert, given that Latin jazz legend Tito Puente received an honorary doctorate from Long Island University in 1994. Impeccably crafted to meet the technical demands of music concerts, the 320-seat theater features a stage extending to the seating area to foster an intimacy between artists and their audiences.

Sabado de Gloria: All-Star Salute to the Giants of Latin Jazz is part of the 7th Annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival, titled "Jazz: A Music Of The Spirit." A portion of the concert's proceeds will go to the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, a not-for-profit arts organization. The Sabado de Gloria concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $100, $75 and $55, available online and at the theater's box office.
