SAN DIEGO, CA (PACIFIC COAST JAZZ) - San Diego-based record label, Pacific Coast Jazz (PCJ), will participate in the 33rd annual International Association for Jazz Education conference (IAJE) in New York City this month. The label's president, Donna Nichols, as well as two of the label's artists, Bradley Leighton and Sherri Roberts, will be on hand at the Pacific Coast Jazz exhibitor's booth. The conference, which will be held January 11 through January 14 in the heart Manhattan, is recognized as the largest gathering of the global jazz community and will attract over 7,000 educators, musicians, record executives, exhibitors and enthusiasts during the event. The Hilton New York and the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers will be the headquarters hotels for the conference.
At the Pacific Coast Jazz booth, number 283, flutist and jazz recording artist Bradley Leighton will be offering an education exhibition, demonstrating and showcasing his sub-contra bass flute to children and educators. 'The flute is over 80 inches long and is actually made of PVC pipe,' says Leighton. Leighton also will be signing autographs and promoting the release of his newest record for the PCJ label, Back to the Funk (January 17, 2006), which was produced by Allan Phillips. Leighton's label mate, jazz vocalist Sherri Roberts, also will be at the booth to sign autographs and promote her new recording, The Sky Could Send You (February, 2006), produced by bassist Harvie S.
Pacific Coast Jazz, founded in 2003, is an independent jazz label that also offers artist management services. Nichols, the label's founder and president, was formerly a successful communications executive in the biotech industry. 'When I started the label, I made a decision to follow my passion for music and combine that with my marketing and management expertise,' she says. This year, Pacific Coast Jazz is pursuing the acquisition of new artists. 'We are on a path for slow but steady growth, so that we can continue to give a lot of individual attention to each of our artists,' says Nichols. 'We are looking for serious artists in both the traditional jazz and contemporary jazz genres. Our team has the talent and the contacts to handle the promotional demands for both of these markets successfully.' She adds that she is looking forward to the networking opportunities at the IAJE conference. 'This is a fantastic event in the jazz community and a great opportunity to meet artists and other industry execs as well as the fans. The IAJE is considered the leading authority and primary voice for the promotion of jazz through education and outreach. Their mission is to assure the continued worldwide growth and development of jazz and jazz education. This year's annual conference offers a full schedule of concerts, exhibits, clinics and workshops as well as networking opportunities. Evening concerts will feature such artists as the Ravi Coltrane Quartet, The Count Basie Orchestra, Mingus Big Band and performances by Chick Corea and the Corea, DeJohnette, Gomez Trio.
