OTTAWA, Canada (AP) -
Alanis Morissette fans who feared that some of the new songs she had been premiering online and at recent shows wouldn't be released can rest easy -- they'll all see the light of day.
After the Ottawa-born singer recently altered the track list on her upcoming album "Under Rug Swept," some fans began circulating a letter to Morissette asking her to reconsider the fate of "Fear Of Bliss," "Sister Blister," "Bent 4 U," and "Sorry To Myself."
In a message posted at her website, Morissette has confirmed that, although those songs won't form part of "Under Rug Swept" when the album is released on Feb. 26, they will surface on a subsequent release.
"I wrote about 30 songs over the last year and recorded all of them in some form," Morissette explained in the "Paintbox" section of her official website (www.alanismorissette.com).
She said she was "really focusing on the final 21 songs and finally deciding (after excruciating deliberation and vacillations) on 11 of them for the record (which I consider "volume one") and the rest of them on an EP which will come out some time after the release of the record (volume 2). "Any of the ones that don't show up on the EP will show up somewhere because I love them and would like to share them."
The singer also revealed that:
the album's first single will be "Hands Clean" the cover of the new album will be a collage of her photos she is preparing a DVD documenting the making of "Under Rug Swept," which she said "took me through a re-awakening of sorts." "I was feeling pretty numb and forgot what I believed in and who I thought I was and felt much fear about certain choices I was facing. I knew that writing the record would gently (and sometimes not so gently) bring me face to face with my truths and really require me to define myself."
The album's big change is that she didn't work with a songwriting collaborator. She also handled production herself.
"I wrote on guitar and keyboards mostly. I'm a hack but I am intrigued by what comes out of my 'hackfestival' playing because I know that as I evolve as a player, different chord choices, etc., will emerge.
Morissette has put together a new band to tour behind "Under Rug Swept". She recently taped an appearance with that ensemble for a new music-themed show to air on the U.S. Bravo network.
She also hinted the album may not be to everyone's liking. "The truth is, I know that some people will like what I am sharing ... and others won't ... and some won't care either way," she said.
"I am motivated by expressing and knowing that there may be the odd person out there who will feel validated or comforted (particularly right now in today's climate) or inspired to express themselves ... or feel less alone in a world that I think we can so easily believe the illusion that we are alone and separate (which I know we are not) ... If I can offer any kind of support or propelling or a place to land or cry or feel buoyed ... then I feel blessed and grateful beyond description to be able to offer that."
