MILL VALLEY, CA. (By Miriam Schaffer/ www.e-agency.com) - A world-class group of recording industry superstars has launched a new independent record label, About Records.
"Our team shares a vision about the next big thing in popular music," said About Records founder and CEO, George Daly. "The numbers confirm our instincts that the market for great songs - those songs that stay with listeners for a lifetime - is ready for popular explosion, and we plan to light the fuse. We are committed to discovering and developing those few rare artists who have great songs and compelling performances."
Based in Mill Valley, California, the company is headed up by Daly, whose background spans years of experience in senior executive roles at several major record companies including Columbia, Atlantic, and Elektra Records. His recording industry career has over the years included work with many top artists including Northern California's Boz Scaggs, and Carlos Santana, as well as the Eagles and Tool.
"A dream team of talent, experience and expertise has been assembled for this label," continued Daly. "Many of the key players are Grammy award winners with multiple Platinum and Gold albums to their credit."
Lending their expertise to the company's outsourced production and A&R resources are prominent producers David Malloy, Chuck Plotkin, and Rob Fraboni. Their combined credits include writing and production work for headliners the likes of the Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Roseanne Cash, and Bob Dylan. Plotkin is credited with producing all of Springsteen's best-known works. Malloy's credits include an unprecedented 40 number one billboard hits over the course of a 20-year career. He is also vice president of A&R for About Records' office in Nashville.
Others on the About team are General Manager Dan Sapp and Vice President of Sales and Marketing Michael Regan. Regan joins the company from MCA records.
About Records has signed its first artist, Tim Hockenberry, and is enthused with investor response. The company has also secured a U.S. distribution deal with Lightyear Entertainment through WEA, a member of the Warner Music Group.
