NEW YORK (AP) - Friends of the United Nations will honor Alanis Morissette with a Global Tolerance Award on Dec. 11 in New York City.

According to the organization, Morissette is being recognized for her outstanding contributions to promote tolerance through her music, citing the singer's involvement with Music Without Borders, Seattle's Groundwork 2001, and her treks to Cuba, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe in the summer of 2000. Morissette ended that trip with a special acoustic performance at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.

Senior U.N. personnel, key members of the diplomatic community, and representatives of private and civil society sectors are expected to attend the presentation in the United Nations Delegates Dining Room. The event coincides with the U.N.'s Human Rights Day.

Meanwhile, Morissette is gearing up for the release of her forthcoming album, Under Rug Swept (due Feb. 25), the follow-up to 1998's Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie.

The singer has thus far confirmed two radio show appearances in advance of the album's release: Dec. 3 at the Mix 98.5 Holiday Hoedown at the Fleet Center in Boston (with Barenaked Ladies, Coldplay, and the Cranberries) and Dec. 7 at the Star 100.7 Jingle Ball at the Cox Arena in San Diego (with Barenaked Ladies, Blondie, Sugar Ray, and Stevie Nicks).
