New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Chance McCoy will release his solo debut album Wander Wide on
September 20th. Best known as a member of the Grammy-winning Americana powerhouse Old Crow Medicine Show, McCoy reveals a remarkable depth and versatility far beyond anything we've heard from him yet. Today he released two new songs from the forthcoming album, "Jitterbug Bayou" and "Whippoorwill," the latter which is also featured in the new film The Peanut Butter Falcon starring Shia LaBeouf.
Chance spoke with American Songwriter and described "Jitterbug Bayou" as "a song about following your heart...Follow your bliss and don't let nobody tell you different." He also went into detail about the origins of "Whippoorwill" which was recorded as a "one-take, stream of consciousness affair...capturing the song as it came flying out the very first time."
McCoy began teasing new songs from his debut early this spring. Rolling Stone called the lead single "No One Loves You (The Way That I Do)" an "atmospheric, concise tune" that "channels youthful wanderlust in the idyllic folk meditation." It was followed by "Lonesome Pine," a slow-burning track that draws on McCoy's enduring passion for nature. The Boot called it "vaguely mystical" while The New York Times stated, "The solitude is palpable in 'Lonesome Pine': in its sparse handful of guitar notes, in the fitful rustle of its brushed snare drum and in the age-old imagery." The album's title track was featured on Billboard who said the new songs "let the West Virginia-born multi-instrumentalist expand his sonic palette."
Captivating in its cross of the traditional and the progressive, Wander Wide shows little regard for the conventional boundaries of genre and decade, blending old-school bluegrass melodies with modern rock and roll arrangements and rich, atmospheric production. Raised in West Virginia, his first musical loves weren't the folk and bluegrass he'd eventually become known for, but rather the grunge and classic rock he heard on the radio. Combined with his proficiency as a fiddler, guitarist, and banjo player, crafts that he honed while apprenticing under a series of master Appalachian players, Wander Wide draws inspiration from those early musical influences to create a captivating musical contrast.
"People know me as a folk musician, but I'm expanding my creative horizons and blazing some new trails with this album," said Chance. "Wandering's what I do."
