UM, the full-service marketing and media agency network of IPG Mediabrands, received numerous awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, including its first-ever Entertainment Lions Grand Prix win for 5B, the documentary film celebrating the heroic nurses who established San Francisco's first HIV ward. Commissioned by Johnson & Johnson and executive produced by UM Studios, the film received the Grand Prix for "Entertainment Lions—Non-fiction Film Over 30 Min;" Gold for "Film Craft Lions—Direction;"
Silver for "Health & Wellness - Corporate Image & Communications—Film: Cinema, TV and
Digital Film Content;" and
Silver for "Film Craft Lions—Editing."

5B is the inspirational story of everyday heroes who took extraordinary action to comfort, protect and care for the patients of the first AIDS ward unit in the United States. 5B is stirringly told through first-person testimony of these nurses and caregivers who built Ward 5B in 1983 at San Francisco General Hospital, their patients, loved ones, and staff who volunteered to create care practices based in humanity and holistic well-being during a time of great uncertainty. The result is an uplifting yet candid and bittersweet monument to a pivotal moment in American history and a celebration of quiet hero's worthy of renewed recognition.
