SARASOTA, FL. (Sarasota Music Festival)

WHAT:
The 41st annual Sarasota Music Festival, a three-week festival for the teaching and performance of chamber music.

WHERE:
Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center, 709 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, Florida, 34236

WHEN:
May 30-June 18, 2005

WHY:
The Sarasota Music Festival is one of the nation's premier summer chamber music teaching and performing festivals. Scheduled for May 30-June 18, this three-week event is an intense immersion in chamber music for nearly 85 students from top colleges and conservatories, and 40 nationally recognized, professional musicians serving as the Festival's faculty. The Festival holds close to 250 rehearsals, over 60 different master classes, and 14 concerts all featuring the talents of the faculty and students.

Artistic Director since its inception, Paul Wolfe welcomes Associate Director Robert Levin to the administrative staff this year. Mr. Levin has been on the faculty of the Sarasota Music Festival since 1979. He is currently the Dwight P. Robinson Jr. Professor of Humanities at Harvard University.

The Festival process starts with choosing the best Faculty Artists from around the world, including violinists Joseph Silverstein and Timothy Lees, pianists Claude Frank, Robert Levin and Susan Starr, and flute virtuoso Carol Wincenc. Hundreds of students from around the world send in applications and audition tapes. Only the best are accepted.

The schedule includes three Artist Showcases on Thursday afternoons at the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center, and six Festival Concerts held on Friday and Saturday evenings at the Sarasota Opera House, with Friday's concerts followed by student postlude ensembles. Artist Showcases allow the faculty to shine, presenting works of small ensembles in an intimate setting. The Festival Concerts present treasures of the chamber music repertoire, including works by Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. On Saturday, June 4, Joseph Silverstein will conduct an all Mozart concert featuring the Cosi fan Tutte Overture, Piano Concerto K. 488 and Symphony No. 41 "Jupiter."

Passes can be purchased for a behind-the-scenes look into the collaboration between musicians and students. A full three-week festival pass may be purchased for $75 value. One week, day, or class pass may also be purchased.

The Sarasota Music Festival is a program of the Florida West Coast Symphony, a $4.5 million organization serving the west coast of Florida.
Tickets: $5 - $39. Ticket Hotline: 941-953-3434. For further information call 941-953-4252 or visit https://www.fwcs.org.
