Eden Samara releases her highly anticipated debut EP Days on 5th April. The EP materialised through a host of creatives including engineer Matt
Stevens (Bruno Mars, Young Thug, Keys N Krates), Sydney Galbraith, (Desert Fish Studios), artist and producer Jim
Junior (Ralph), songwriter John Mavro (River Tiber) and techno producer and DJ Ryan Pierre. Her singles 'Robots' and 'Days' were premiered by Line Of Best Fit and
Clash Magazine respectively. Prior to that, 'Upside Down' was released independently in February 2018 and quickly caught the attention of Spotify, being placed on several of their editorial playlists. June 2018 saw the release of a second single, 'High School' with the video premiered by Exclaim! Magazine and featured in KALTBLUT's 'Top 5 Video's of the Week.'
Growing up in
Nelson BC, a quaint, artsy town, Samara spent her days writing songs and performing in choirs, and her nights sneaking out to underground raves to listen to electronic music. These two contrasting influences have shaped her, and after a backpacking trip to Europe, she began to pen Days as an exploration of societal expectations and human interaction in the digital age. While her thoughtful songwriting draws parallels to that of
Lorde or Banks, Eden Samara names artists such as Kelela, Dev Hynes, DJ Rashad and
Jessy Lanza as a few of her musical inspirations.
Eden Samara believes that behind every song there should be a good story, and on the Days EP there are certainly a few. This is a contemporary collection of eclectic electro-pop songs by an unequivocal misadventurer - with more than enough lyrical ammunition in her arsenal to mark her out as a talent to watch. Speaking of Days, Eden says: "the Days EP has an overarching theme of "what is the right way to spend my time?" I wanted to talk about the universal desire to find meaning in life and create genuine connections with each other, in a time when our empathy has been dulled and the media dictates what an ideal life should look like. The EP looks at a recent slice of my mid-twenties when I had a bit of an existential crisis over this."
In addition to the release of her EP, Eden Samara is also sharing her new music video for the title track off her EP. Samara is shown as a self-medicating modern housewife, stuck between a fantasy of herself as the fetishized archetype that 'every' man wants, and the woman she wishes she could be.
On the Days Video, Eden says "Creating the video for Days was a collaboration with Vancouver director Darcy Hennessey Turenne, along with the Pool Service who are friends of mine from high school. A whole group of our childhood friends were involved in the shoot which made it even more surreal and special on set. All of the women involved with this video (both on and off-camera) are huge powerhouses that I am so privileged to have worked with. Together we created our own wacky universe to express thoughts and feelings of "who does society tell me I have to be?" vs "who do I want to be?"
