Music recording artist and producer Balt Getty releases his new single "
Retail Therapy" featuring rapper Devante available to stream on all platforms.
An ode to consumerism, the hip-hop song layers a melodic, playful beat under soulful delivery. The track is lightheartedly tongue-in-cheek, employing Getty's signature witticism and lyrical irony. His verse, a mix of singing and rap, marks his most significant vocal presence on a track to date. "It's time for me to step out as an artist," he says, "not just as a producer."
, of the famed Getty Family, began his DJ training at 15 with DJ Mike Messex in his hometown of Los Angeles; by 16, he was playing the most exclusive clubs in the city. After a long and successful career in film and TV, appearing last in
David Lynch's much-lauded revival of "Twin Peaks," he's given more time to music.
Getty has been busy at work with several hip-hop and house music releases ("Porsche ft
James Wrighter", "Arigato," "AK," "Balt vs. Beats"). His self-founded label, Purplehaus Music, recently opened a creative space in West Hollywood. Getty delights in cross-genre choices in both his DJ work and official releases, and has completed residencies at popular clubs Bootsy Bellows and The Warwick.
Getty is also an accomplished visual artist and designer fresh off the launch of his eye popping street wear line, Purplehaus by Balt Getty. "I'm an artist and give myself the freedom to express my energy as different mediums and crafts," Getty says. The pieces feature original work by Getty and are available in limited release on Purplehaus' website.
The "
Retail Therapy" music video, created by the animator team Rough Sketchz, depicts Getty going through a typical day on cartoon scale. Rough Sketchz has earned popular acclaim through their recent clever cartoon videos for rap artists like YG,
Big Sean and Nicki Minaj, and "
Retail Therapy" may just be their best yet.
The video features a cartoon Getty as he adventures around Los Angeles. He rides in enormous shopping cart packed with bags through Beverly Hills, brandishes a blow torch at his mansion with buddies, and has the Mona Lisa in his bathroom with nonchalance as he sings, "Spending so much/I'm scared of me."
Getty has more single releases coming this year.
