NEW YORK (Sony BMG) - It is a pleasure to announce that Steve Greenberg has been named President of Columbia Records. Steve is based in New York and reports to me.
In his new role Steve will work closely with me in overseeing Columbia's A&R activities, and in developing strategies to further expand the label's presence in the marketplace.
Steve's extraordinarily successful track records in A&R and artist development, combined with his considerable business acumen, will make him a key asset as we continue to build Columbia's roster. I'm thrilled that Steve is joining the Columbia team to help make the best records possible, and establish the next generation of Columbia artists.
Commenting in Steve's appointment, Don Ienner said, 'Steve has drive, passion, and determination, he's a true music man, and he knows just about every aspect of the business. His skills and abilities are a perfect complement to those of Will Botwin. With Steve in place, Will and the Columbia team will be absolutely unbeatable.'
Most recently Steve served as the President/CEO of S-Curve Records, which he founded in 2000. During his tenure with S-Curve he played a key role in the success of a wide range of projects, including releases from such artists as Fountains of Wayne (Welcome Interstate Managers, which was nominated for two 2003 Grammy awards) and Joss Stone (The Soul Sessions EP and the Mind, Body and Soul ). Currently, Steve is a Grammy nominee in the 'Best Pop Vocal Album' category as co-producer of Mind, Body and Soul, which was nominated for three 2004 Grammys in total. Other successful S-Curve projects have included Who Let The Dogs Out, for which Steve earned a 2001 Grammy Award in the 'Best Dance Recording' category for his efforts as co-producer.
Prior to founding S-Curve, Steve was Sr. Vice-President/Head of A&R for Mercury Records from 1996 to 1999. While at Mercury, he discovered the pop/rock group Hanson and served as Executive Producer of their first album, Middle of Nowhere, which sold over 12 million copies worldwide and was nominated for three Grammy Awards. He also worked on albums by a number of Mercury artists, including Jon Bon Jovi's multi-million selling 1997 solo album, Destination Anywhere.
Steve previously held positions as an A&R executive at Atlantic Records (1992 - 1995) where he was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1995 for his work on Otis! The Essential Otis Redding. From 1991-1992, he was Head of A&R for Atlantic's Big Beat Records label. From 1988 to 1991 he served as Director of International Marketing/A&R for Warner Music International, during which time he was nominated for a Grammy Award as Producer of The Complete Stax/Volt Singles 1959-1968 9-CD boxed set, which has since been certified gold. Before that, he was Staff Writer for WEA International, based in New York. From 1982 to 1984 he worked as a radio and print journalist, based first on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and subsequently in the Middle East.
Steve holds a Master's degree in Applied Communication Research from Stanford University and Bachelor's degree in International Relations from The American University in Washington, D. C. He also spent a year as a research scholar at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School of Communication.
Please join me in welcoming Steve to the company, and in wishing him tremendous success.
