COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Chromatic Technologies) - The recent launch of Nirvana's multi-platinum box set, "With the Light's Out," features Dynacolor thermochromic ink developed by Chromatic Technologies, Inc. (CTI). The black, heat-sensitive ink disappears when touched, revealing various venue rosters from the bands early days. In the first week of release, the three-CD/one-DVD compilation more than doubled the previous record for box sets sold in a week during the soundscan era with 105,760 (the previous mark was held by Bruce Springsteen's "Tracks" with 46,516). "The use of thermochromic inks from Chromatic Technologies added to the WOW impact of the new Nirvana box set," says Ron Harwell, Shorewood vice-president of marketing. "It was the right, innovative solution to meet our customer's quest for a 'reveal' effect to dramatically present some original Nirvana images." This color changing promotion is the latest in a trend toward interactive packaging for consumer goods. Demand for special effect inks and coatings has grown dramatically, due largely to increasing demand for product differentiation. Brand managers and marketers are increasingly employing "smart media" in products ranging from coffee sleeves to children's books. According to CTI President, Lyle Small, demand for innovative inks is on the rise. "We are convinced the specialty ink market is in its infancy. Conventional print media is undergoing a much needed evolution, and we are on the leading edge of that movement."
