Britten's
1947 comic opera in three acts is the story of moral repression
overcome by youthful exuberance. Young Albert is bullied by his mother
into becoming the May King of Loxford when Lady Billows, the town's
self-appointed guardian of public morals, decides that no girl in the
town qualifies as pure enough to be May Queen. Albert's friends Sid and
Nancy lace his lemonade with rum, arousing a little personal rebellion,
and leading to his disappearance, assumed death, and reappearance,
emancipated from social convention.
