New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Idles are a heavy post-punk band. They want to entertain and hurt in equal measure. They believe that art and violence work. Their spirit colour is coral pink. One of them loves queuing, one struggles counting, one has been arrested 8 times, one doesn't like music and one puts sausage rolls on his pizza. Divide and Conquer is the first single from their debut album Brutalism, the track takes a more visceral approach to creating a uniquely heavy sound.
Idles were kind enough to write some of their thoughts on the track and give it some context:
"This is the first song from our album, it is called 'Divide and Conquer' it was written at a time where I watched my mother deteriorate in a hospital that was itself dying.
The song was an observation on how simple financial cuts and the mere action of writing a cross in a box can cut someone's life short.
Today the Tories have started the campaign to sell whatever is left of our NHS or the Sustainability and Transformation Plan as they've put it. Fuck off."
What the press are saying:
"It's politically charged and furious - it's a visceral glimpse behind the mask of Idles, and it's a bruising, lacerating listen" - The Line of Best Fit
IDLES are hard to capture, because they're not Fat White Family, they're not Sleaford Mods, they are very much their own incarnation of uncompromising rhythmical punk rock. Lyrically, a mixture of dry obsessional humour and poetic slogans. But, best of all, they really get the adrenalin pumping" - Steve Lamcq BBC6 Music
"Wilder than a very wild thing marked wild in the wild shop in the middle of the wild wild wood. An IDLES live show is not quite like anything that you have ever seen or heard. Its got all the ingredients taken from rock n roll's rich history but the synthesis is entirely their own. The wild men of Bristol" - Tom Robinson BBC6 music
"The Bristol punx aren't about to take this lying down, and new cut 'Divide And Conquer' is a short and extremely sharp riposte to those in power" -
Robin Murray CLASH
